Kolkata, Friday: In a major administrative move related to the RG Kar case, the West Bengal government has decided to suspend three senior IPS officers over allegations of mishandling the situation, administrative negligence, and inappropriate conduct toward the victim’s family. According to administrative sources, the strict action was taken under the direction of newly elected Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
The suspended officers include Vineet Goyal, Mrs. Indira Mukherjee, and Abhishek Gupta. Allegations against them include failure to properly manage the situation after the incident came to light. Serious accusations have also surfaced regarding attempts to influence the victim’s family through offers of financial settlement or bribes.
Additionally, the officers are accused of organizing a press conference without obtaining appropriate administrative authorization. Certain statements made during the media briefing reportedly raised questions about transparency and the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
The state government clarified that the suspension is only a preliminary administrative measure. A separate internal inquiry has already been initiated to examine administrative accountability and conduct. Officials also emphasized that while the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently probing the main criminal aspect of the RG Kar case, this new inquiry is entirely independent and focused solely on internal administrative responsibilities.
Sources in Nabanna stated, “No negligence or misuse of authority will be tolerated. This decision has been taken to maintain transparency and accountability within the administration.”
It is reported that during the R.G. Kar incident, Vineet Goyal, Ms. Indira Mukherjee, and Abhishek Gupta held key administrative and law-and-order responsibilities within the State Police.
At that time, Vineet Goyal was serving as the Commissioner of the Kolkata Police. His primary responsibilities included maintaining overall law and order in the city, overseeing major criminal investigations, coordinating police operations, and articulating the administration’s stance to the public and the media.
Sources claim that Ms. Indira Mukherjee held significant responsibilities related to administrative coordination and internal oversight. Allegations have surfaced suggesting that there was negligence in the administrative response following the incident, specifically regarding the failure to take appropriate measures to bring the situation under control.
It is also understood that Abhishek Gupta was involved in tasks related to investigative coordination, security arrangements, and the implementation of high-level administrative directives. Controversy subsequently arose regarding his role as well, following questions raised concerning the police’s conduct, the dissemination of information, and the handling of media interactions surrounding the incident.
The development has already triggered intense political reactions across the state. Opposition parties have described the move as a “strong administrative message,” while sections of the ruling establishment claim that the newly elected Chief Minister is determined to restore public confidence and strengthen institutional discipline through decisive action.
As the RG Kar investigation continues to unfold, new details are emerging regularly, leading to speculation that more significant administrative and legal actions could follow in the coming days.
